Saccharomyces boulardii

Saccharomyces boulardii is a non-disease causing yeast species that is closely related to brewer's yeast. It is not, however, related to Candida species (Candida albicans, C. tropicalas, etc.), which is a yeast that can produce many health challenges when it gains a foothold in the gut, genitourinary tract or elsewhere in the body.

When taken orally, S. boulardii survives the very acidic environment of the stomach. It is also unaffected by antibiotics and does not disturb or adversely impact normal bowel ecology (The health-promoting and maintaining colonies of bacteria in the human gut)

Many randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled studies have published in which S. boulardii was clearly shown to both prevent and treat gastrointestinal disorders such as acute diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease. And in animal studies, S. boulardii was found to increase secretion of Immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the small intestine, a protein that helps protect the gut and respiratory tract from invasion by disease-causing microorganisms.
